Working Principle

DTH drill rods function as the mechanical link between the drill rig and the down-the-hole hammer. The rig applies rotation, feed force, and compressed air through the rod string. The rods transmit torque and thrust to the hammer, while also serving as a conduit for high-pressure air. This air drives the hammer piston, which delivers high-frequency impacts to the drill bit, fracturing rock. Simultaneously, the air flushes cuttings out of the hole through the annulus between the rod and the hole wall. The threaded connections at each end of the rod must withstand extreme cyclic loads and provide an airtight seal to maintain air pressure.
